Steps for building an underground shelter

PREPARATION

Before starting work

A site visit is essential to determine the feasibility of the work. A geotechnical study will verify the presence of water in the subsoil and determine the type of geology. We will contact excavation / construction companies in your area and inform you of the necessary permits.

CHOICE OF DIMENSIONS

Then when we are sure we can build you a shelter, we will calculate the total area required according to your needs, as well as any additional storage space for supplies, and get back to you with the size of shelter you will need and the price.

Building planning

EARTHWORKS

The earthworks are done using a hydraulic excavator to a depth of about 4m. Depending on the quality of the excavated soil and the storage area, they will be evacuated and placed in landfills or kept for the future backfill. The base will be a reinforced concrete slab that serves as a foundation for the structure. The thickness of the raft is on average 12''.

The ventilation systems that equip our fallout shelters provide protection against nuclear, biological and chemical pollutants. The amount of air required is regulated by the integrated air flow meter. Finally, even if the power were to be cut off, the device can be manually rescued using a crank.

NRBC FILTRATIONS

Protects air intakes against blast up to a pressure of 1 bar. Opens (60Pa) and closes automatically when ventilation is cut off. Prevents contaminated outside air from entering the shelter. Protects air supplies and exhausts against blast up to a pressure of 1 bar.

What you need to store in your shelter

Glass of water

HYDRATION

You should prioritise drinking water. Make sure you have water purification kits. Taranis Secur can actually build a well in your shelter, and we usually offer this as standard (this depends on the water table of your land and whether proper water drilling tests prove successful). In any case, the water you store will need to be enough to last at least 6 months to a year. If you want an indication of how much to use, 3-4 litres per day should cover drinking and washing needs (i.e. 3-4 litres for each person).

NUTRITION

At Taranis Secur, we always recommend that you store enough food to last for a year. No exceptions! You need powdered milk for all babies (as well as baby food), canned goods, dried fruits and vegetables and other non-perishable goods, as well as freeze-dried products that can be found from specialist suppliers and the food you get there will have a minimum shelf life of 35 years and more.

We calculate the square footage of your bunker based on the number of people requiring its protection, but we always include additional square footage for storing these supplies.

DIMENSIONS

Our underground shelters are fully customizable and the floor plan we represent here is just one variation of what you can do with your underground shelter. In truth, you can create anything with your shelter, such as a media room or a home gym. Even the dimensions of the floor plan are up to you. However, since the primary function of a shelter is to protect you, we have designed these floor plans with longevity, economy, and comfort in mind. Feel free to modify your underground shelter to fit your needs!

CUSTOMIZABLE

Customizable to your needs, you can design your survival shelter as a media room, home office, gym or fallout shelter with the living conditions needed to encourage longevity. Built to withstand any force, these units are equipped with security doors and clad in steel. A Taranis Secur underground shelter can be designed to be accessible from the safety of your home, and if you are building your home from scratch, we can even build it directly under your home, with proper planning.

SEVERAL POINTS CAN INFLUENCE THE PRICE

How many people can my shelter accommodate?

How will I power my shelter?

It is important to note that building a nuclear shelter is an expensive project and requires careful planning by professionals.

On average, it can cost between $900 and $1000 per square foot. So, for a 200 square foot (10' x 20') bunker, the cost of construction will vary between $180,000 and $200,000.

The price does NOT include installation or transportation from the factory to your job site. The budget for installation is approximately 30% of the cost of the shelter would be a good estimate.

What does installing a shelter involve? Trucking, excavation, concrete work, crane service, welders, fitters, plumbers and electricians.

Radio de secour

COMMUNICATION

An easily portable (but powerful) radio. Make sure you have PLENTY of batteries, and it's a good idea to have a spare radio in reserve just in case (NB - A hand-wound radio is more likely to survive the effects of EMP [electromagnetic pulse] which will destroy all the circuits in electronic equipment, rendering them useless)! You may not think it, but having a radio is of paramount importance. It will be your only communication with the outside world.

OTHER ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS

- Can/bottle opener, kitchen utensils, plates and pots/pans.

- Thick, padded outerwear, walking shoes and plenty of spare clothes

- Duvets, sheets, camping gear (especially the kind you would use for sleeping outdoors), such as tents and sleeping bags

- An electric torch, matches, candles, lanterns, etc. Only use an open flame in shelters AFTER opening the doors

- Toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrush, toilet paper, soap, shampoo, deodorant, etc.)

- Have at least 3 first aid kits on hand (including LOTS of pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, and gloves, masks, hand sanitizer).

- If you need to take medication regularly, stock up WELL IN ADVANCE
